A Trip to the Marblehead Lighthouse

We've had quite the winter (as everyone is well aware!) and Lake Erie has more ice on it this year than it has in the past 35 years. We live just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the lake, so after seeing all these gorgeous images on Facebook, other social media sites, and even the news, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to take Tinley to see the blue "ice show" at the Marblehead Light House, which is a short drive over the bridge for us.

Aren't these images amazing?!

As much as we’re all expectantly awaiting sunshine and warm weather, anyone who’s lived here for any length of time knows March in Ohio can mean snow, wind, ice, rain, sun, or record warmth (remember the 85-degree March days just two years ago?). But, I have faith that with the official arrival of spring last week, that the end is near... at least I hope so- I'm going to ignore those huge flakes we had Monday and the 1/2 inch of snow we woke up to Wednesday morning! So, this is my adios to winter… ciao, adieu, cheerio, bye bye… you get the idea… for several months, anyway.

Taking Tinley to see the ice on Sunday was a perfect way to hopefully end Winter 2014. It made the brutal winter almost seem worth it. It was a blustery 23 degrees, with a 15 degree wind chill. It was almost unbearable to be out on the ice for a long period of time, regardless of how neat it was. But, she enjoyed it, and that's really all that matters.

It almost seemed as if we weren't in Ohio when we were out walking along the ice. It was as if we had been transported to Alaska or Antarctica; it was like nothing I've ever seen before. The ice gives off a bluish color, which I learned from research is a result of the refractions of light. It truly was one of the most spectacular things in nature I’ve ever seen, and made me appreciate living so close to one of the Great Lakes.

  1. What a fun trip! That blue ice is totally beautiful! I'm from the midwest and I've never seen anything like that before! Looks like miss T had a blast running around! Fun day for all :)
